Mary
Obering at Jan Turner Gallery 1992 |
For something completely different,
go around the corner for the cool, elegant geometric but in no
way minimal painting of New York artist Mary Obering. Obering
renders her minimalist parades of concentric squares and rectangles
with a rich, sensuous palette - a palette that includes sumptuous
reds and blues, sour yellows, milky whites, silky blacks and,
of all things, gold leaf, which Obering uses as much as any other
color, making the sequences of rectangles that much more, and
much more strangely, opulent. The eye finds itself at once recoiling
from and luxuriating in Obering's seductive reductivism.
Mary Obering is showing at
Jan Turner, 9006 Melrose Ave. in West Hollywood thru February
26.
